Early Life and Family
Forrest Richard Betts, known professionally as Dickey Betts, was born on December 12, 1943, in West Palm Beach, Florida. He is an American guitarist, singer, songwriter, and composer, best known as a founding member of the Allman Brothers Band.
Marriage and Family
Dickey Betts married Barbara Hudgins in 1964. The couple had two children before divorcing in 1972. Betts later married Donna Betts, with whom he had two more children.
Legal Issues
In 2017, Donna Betts was facing 18 counts of aggravated assault for allegedly pointing a rifle at rowers on the St. Johns River in Florida. The charges were eventually dropped.
Band Memberships
Dickey Betts was a founding member of the Allman Brothers Band, which released numerous successful albums and singles throughout the 1970s and 1980s. After leaving the band in 1977, he formed the Dickey Betts Band and later rejoined the Allman Brothers Band in 1989. He left the band again in 2000 and has continued to perform as a solo artist.
Health and Death
Drummer Butch Trucks committed suicide in January 2017. Gregg Allman, the band's frontman, succumbed to liver cancer in May 2017.
