A Tradition Born in the Mines

The Essen Lichterfest, a captivating festival of lights that illuminates the city of Essen, Germany each year, traces its origins to a humble beginning in the 19th century coal mines. Miners, working in the dark and dangerous depths of the earth, would often carry small lights to guide their way.
